Anyone that is/was a fister understands that. I won't say what it is, but fisters have a reputation to uphold. I can't emphasize this enough: know your job in and out, it makes your life so much easier. ![]() There is almost always something on station (air support above, helicopter or fixed wing depending on the day) or a fire direction center that you will be in communication with. Most fisters are attached to other units, either cavalry or infantry (and sometimes armor, for who the fuck knows why), and hold the responsibility of calling assets to cover your patrol elements asses. That is not so much the case with our non-linear combat action that is happening in Afghanistan. In a traditional front line style war, we would have been tasked with sneaking around, on foot, establishing an observation point, and calling for indirect fire on enemy targets. I was on a COLT (Combat Observation Lasing Team). I deployed to Iraq, and never got to call for a single round. Our primary role in the field was to set up observation points, and call for our brigade's fire support: artillery and mortars. I was with a heavy unit (which sucked), but we trained like a light unit. Here's how Fisters, FO's, work in the Army as of last year when I got out. Do not answer n00b questions on the main boards.
